Welcome to CapAVID
So what is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. AVID at Capuchino has become a bridge to the IB program. At the 9th & 10th grade level, we focus on the skills needed to succeed in high school (note-taking, time management, organization, etc.) & provide students an environment where they are comfortable & confident enough as students to enroll in IB classes for their junior & senior years.
At the junior & senior levels, the focus shifts to preparing students for college. Besides learning about what it takes to be accepted to a four-year university, the class emphasizes what skills students need to actually graduate from college. The AVID curriculum was developed by high school teachers working together with college professors.
The class is an academic elective & students are recruited for the class based on parent, teacher, & counselor recommendations. Please feel free to email Mr. Letke with any questions or if you would like to recommend your student for AVID.
AVID Update: January 2011
100% of our AVID seniors applied to at least one four-year university. Last year, all of our seniors who applied were accepted - so we are hopeful for similar results this year.
Among the schools applied to are: Stanford, Brown, Columbia, USC, New York University, Amherst, Reed College, Sarah Lawrence College, Santa Clara, Virginia Tech, University of Portland, University of the Pacific, USF, University of Oregon, Dominican, St. Mary's, all of the University of California campuses, & 15 of the Cal State Univeristy campuses. Some of our seniors have already received acceptance letters!!
Sign-ups for the annual Southern California College Tour have begun. This year we will be visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Santa Barbara, San Diego State University, UC San Diego, UCLA & the University of Southern California. The trip will take place April 28-30. The trip is an incredible experience for students! Please email Mr. Letke for further details.
